The idea that coffee is bad for your heart pops up periodically. Over the last 20

years several studies—mainly in Europe—found that regular drinking very strong coffee could sharply increase cholesterol levels. Researchers even isolated fatlike chemicals, cafestol and kahweol, responsible for the rise. It turned out that the European brewing method—boiling water sits on the coffee grounds for several minutes before straining—produces high concentrations of cofestol and kahweol. By contrast, filter and percolation methods remove all but a trace of these chemicals. Moreover, the studies involved large amounts of coffee—five to six cup a day. Average coffee drinkers consume only two cups.

The topic of the text is

 A.  the bad effects of strong, coffee

 B.  the correct way of brewing coffee

 C.  fat contents in coffee

D.  dangerous substances in coffee

E.  the link between coffee and heart disease

Two common types of body decoration in tribal societies are tattooing and scarification. A tattoo is a design or mark made by putting a kind of dye (usually dark blue) into a cut in the skin. In scarification, dirt or ashes are put into the cuts instead of dye. In both of  these cases, the result is a design that is unique to the person’s tribe. Three lines on each side of a man’s face identify him as a member of the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria. A complex geometric design on a woman’s back identifies her as Nubba—and also makes her more beautiful in the eyes of her people.

What is the topic of the paragraph?                                                                                                               A.The method of tattooing                                                                                                                             B. During the past five years, the number of Americans killed annually in car accident has climbed to more than 55,000.This needless slaughter on streets and highways can be attributed to three general causes. (1) Mechanical failures, especially those related to faulty brakes and bad tires, account for significant number of fatal accidents. (2) Environmental conditions such as blind corners, narrow streets, heavy fogs, intermittent rain or snow resulting in slippery roads also contribute to grisly accident statistics. (3) But without doubt the most frequently reported factors in car accidents are errors of’ human judgment all the way from the follies as excessive speed and drunken driving to such momentary lapses as failure to signal a turn or a change form one lane to another. Last week was a hectic week. I have been touring East Java and Bali. There were so many things that I’ve experienced that it’s difficult to write about all of them.

I arrived in Yogyakarta, on Sunday. I stayed in a cheap accommodation, a wisma. The room was clean and I could get hot water to bathe. On Monday, I went with a tour group to visit Borobudur and the Hindu temples in Prambanan. Some of these temples are more than twelve hundred years old. They date well beyond the churches in my hometown in Europe; I was amazed at the enormity of the construction. I’m sure they did not have the heavy machines we have today to raise and lay those huge blocks of stone. The carvings on the walls were another feature of the construction.

I’m getting used to the spicy food served here. I have eaten fresh fish, lamb and beef. I know you don’t eat all this but I’ve got used to it. On Tuesday I decided to go for a hike to Mount Merapi. But I found out that it was a difficult climb. So I went to the forest park in Kaliurang. That was a lovely walk that made me hot and tired. But I managed to cool off in a waterfall in the park then walked up to a hill nearby where 1 could see the smoky, fiery Mount Merapi.

The main idea of the second paragraph is ….

A. the writer arrived in Yogyakarta

B. Borobudur, Prambanan temples and the carvings amazed the writer

C. the writer visited Borobudur and Prambanan temples with a tour group

A farmer came across a bird with a broken wing. He picked it up, took it home and looked after it lovingly, even though his wife complained bitterly about his wasting too much time on the creature. After some time, the wing mended and, because the bird did not want the farmer to have kept on arguing with his wife all the time, it decided to go back to its nest. When the farmer discovered that the bird was gone, he was so upset that he went out to look for it. Eventually, he found it again, and was greeted happily by the whole family of the bird. As a sign of their thanks for his care and attention, the birds gave him a little box, and told him not to open it until he got home. To his surprise, the farmer found the box full of precious stones. When his wife saw them, she decided that she too deserved a reward, and she went to see the birds. The birds gave her a little casket; but this one was full of devils. The devils jumped on her as soon as she opened the casket and chased her away. YONKERS, Nov 12th. A four alarm fire damaged 14 stores today in the Cross County Shopping Center, the largest shopping center in Westchester County. The fire started at 4.40 p.m. and was declared under control at 6.14 p.m. The center is on the Cross County Parkway at the Gov. Thomas E. Dewey Thruway. Five fire-fighters were busy at the scene.
